About this artwork
In a small park behind Lucerne's old town, a dying lion ten metres long lies carved into the living sandstone: head sunk, a broken spear in its side, one paw resting on a shield with the fleur-de-lis of the French crown, the Swiss cross on a second shield beside it. Bertel Thorvaldsen designed the monument and Lukas Ahorn cut it into the cliff in 1821, for the Swiss Guards who died defending the Tuileries in 1792. Below it, a dark still pond reflects the rock. Mark Twain called it the saddest and most moving piece of stone he had seen. Soft, quiet park light.
Every Jason D’s Vision image is an AI-generated artistic interpretation of a real place — original artwork, not a photograph. The label bar on the download may show a creative daylight scenario; that is artistic staging, not a record of a real event.
