Geneva's international quarter states its purpose in one square. Before the long facade of the Palais des Nations — built for the League of Nations in the 1930s, now the UN's European home, fronted by its avenue of member flags — stands the Broken Chair: a wooden chair twelve metres tall on three legs, the fourth snapped off, raised in 1997 for the campaign against landmines. Sculptor Daniel Berset's giant has outstayed its planned three months by decades and become the square's signature: diplomacy behind it, its cost in front. Bright open-square light.
